Amazon Makes Last-Minute Bid to Buy TikTok

Solen Feyissa

Amazon has bid to acquire TikTok as the app faces an April 5 deadline to sever ties with its Chinese ownership or face a U.S. ban, according to a new report from The New York Times. However, sources suggest the bid is not being taken seriously. A deal is expected to be finalized before the deadline.

Meanwhile, Andreessen Horowitz is exploring an investment in TikTok as part of an Oracle-led bid, while private equity firm Blackstone may join other non-Chinese stakeholders to provide fresh capital for TikTok’s U.S. operations.

ChatGPT's Image Generation Tool Is Now Free

OpenAI

ChatGPT’s new image generator, which has gone viral for its Studio Ghibli-inspired creations, is now available to all users after a brief delay. Initially rolled out only to paid tiers, CEO Sam Altman confirmed on X that free users can now access the feature, though with a limit of three images per day.

Launched on March 25th and powered by GPT-4o, the image generator was always intended for all subscription tiers, including Free. The rollout was delayed by just a day due to high demand, with ChatGPT experiencing a surge of a million new users in an hour, prompting Altman to joke about “melting GPUs.”

Nintendo Switch 2 Launches on June 5 for $449.99

Nintendo

The Nintendo Switch 2 will launch on June 5 for $450, with pre-orders opening on April 9. This confirms previous rumors and aligns with Nintendo’s global roadshow events, where fans can get a first look at the console before its official release.

The Switch 2 features a larger 7.9-inch 1080p display, double the pixel density of the original, and supports up to 4K in docked mode. It also offers up to 120Hz gameplay with HDR, though it uses an LCD screen instead of OLED. With 6 to 8 million units ready at launch, Nintendo aims to meet high demand.

Alabama, Minnesota Advance Bitcoin Reserve Plans

Kanchanara

Lawmakers in Minnesota and Alabama have introduced bills allowing their states to invest in Bitcoin. In Minnesota, Representative Bernie Perryman introduced the Minnesota Bitcoin Act (HF 2946) on April 1, following a similar bill by Senator Jeremy Miller in March.

In Alabama, Senator Will Barfoot and a bipartisan group led by Mike Shaw filed bills to allow the state to invest in cryptocurrency, mainly Bitcoin. Minnesota’s bill also allows state employees to add crypto to retirement accounts, exempts crypto gains from state taxes, and lets residents pay taxes with Bitcoin.

Binance’s CZ Donates 1,000 BNB for Earthquake Relief

Binance

Binance co-founder Changpeng "CZ" Zhao donated 1,000 BNB tokens, worth nearly $600,000, to disaster relief efforts in Thailand and Myanmar following a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake on March 28. Zhao’s donation was confirmed through blockchain data and shared in an April 3 X post, highlighting the growing role of crypto in emergency charity work.

The earthquake caused significant damage, with over 2,700 confirmed deaths in Myanmar and 18 in Thailand, and many more missing. Zhao had initially pledged 500 BNB, but doubled his contribution in response to the crisis. Crypto donations have proven essential in the region, helping bypass banking restrictions caused by damaged infrastructure.
