Elon Musk says he is not interested in buying TikTok

Elon Musk dismissed speculation about acquiring TikTok, stating he’s “not chomping at the bit” to buy the platform. His comments came during a January 28 interview at the WELT Economic Summit, now making headlines after the video surfaced.
The discussion followed President Trump’s delay of a law forcing TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell or face a U.S. ban. Rumors swirled that Musk, a key Trump ally, might step in, with Trump even suggesting Musk or Oracle’s Larry Ellison as potential buyers. However, Musk was clear: “I have not put in a bid for TikTok.”
Musk admitted he doesn’t use TikTok and isn’t familiar with it. If he did acquire it, he’d analyze the algorithm’s impact on society. He also called his Twitter (now X) purchase an exception, as he typically builds companies from scratch.

UK orders Apple to open up users' encrypted cloud data

The UK government has secretly ordered Apple to grant unrestricted access to encrypted iCloud data worldwide, The Washington Post reports. Issued last month under the Investigatory Powers Act (IPA), the demand requires Apple to create a backdoor for UK security officials—an unprecedented move in any democracy. Critics call the IPA a "Snooper’s Charter" for its sweeping surveillance powers.
Apple is legally barred from disclosing the order, and the UK Home Office won’t confirm or deny its existence. Experts warn Apple couldn’t alert users if encryption was compromised, raising concerns about foreign governments being spied on. A former White House security adviser confirmed the request.
Apple may withdraw encrypted iCloud services from the UK rather than weaken security, but the order could still impact users elsewhere. It has also threatened to pull FaceTime and iMessage over similar demands.

Amazon will pay $4 million to settle driver tip theft lawsuit

Amazon will pay $3.95 million to settle a lawsuit accusing it of stealing over $60 million in tips from Flex drivers, DC Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb announced. The settlement includes $2.45 million in penalties and requires Amazon to disclose if tips are used for anything other than driver pay.
From 2016 to 2019, Amazon withheld nearly a third of drivers’ tips to cover base wages without informing them, despite assuring customers tips would go directly to drivers. The FTC forced Amazon to reimburse $61.7 million, but DC’s lawsuit aimed to hold the company fully accountable and deter similar misconduct.
Amazon denies wrongdoing but agreed to settle within 30 days. Schwalb emphasized that misleading customers for profit must have consequences beyond simply returning stolen funds.
