STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TECH
Microsoft Re-releases Recall for Windows Insiders

Windows

Microsoft is rolling out Recall to Windows Insiders, a feature that lets users quickly revisit previous content, such as web pages and emails. Originally set for a June 2024 release, the launch was delayed to address security and privacy concerns, with another delay in October for further refinement.

Recall captures regular screenshots of your activity, stored in a searchable database. Users can browse the timeline or search using natural language to find past tasks. Due to privacy concerns, the feature is opt-in and requires identity verification via Windows Hello. With this preview, Recall is closer to a full release.

BUSINESS
Google Reportedly Lays Off Hundreds of Employees

Google

Google has laid off hundreds of employees from its Platforms and Devices division, which covers Pixel phones, Nest devices, Android, and ChromeOS. The division, home to over 25,000 workers, was formed last year through a merger. Google previously offered buyouts in January as part of a "voluntary exit plan" to streamline operations.

A spokesperson confirmed that the layoffs were part of a push to make the company more nimble and efficient. The decision to offer buyouts, rather than immediate layoffs, followed employee complaints after previous rounds of job cuts.

Lucid Motors Wins Nikola Bankruptcy Auction

Nikola

Lucid Motors has won the bankruptcy auction for Nikola’s Arizona factory and assets, committing around $30 million in cash and non-cash considerations. The deal includes Nikola's Phoenix headquarters lease, machinery, and inventory.

Lucid plans to offer jobs to about 300 former Nikola employees in various roles. Interim CEO Marc Winterhoff said the acquisition will help expand Lucid’s production for upcoming vehicles. However, Lucid will not acquire Nikola’s hydrogen trucking assets or customers. Lucid outbid three other unnamed bidders in the auction, which began on April 7.

OpenAI Countersues Elon Musk for Harassment

Robbert Pool

OpenAI countersued Elon Musk on Wednesday, accusing him of harassment and asking a judge to stop any further "unlawful actions" in their ongoing legal battle. The dispute focuses on OpenAI's transition to a for-profit model, which is essential for securing $40 billion in its fundraising round. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 before leaving, has tried to block the move, leveraging his social media influence and legal threats.

OpenAI claims Musk’s actions, including a flawed asset bid and harassment campaigns, have damaged the company. It is now seeking a court order to prevent further attacks and hold Musk accountable. A jury trial is set for next spring.

Mira Murati’s AI Startup Aims for $2B Seed Round

Patrick T. Fallon

Thinking Machines Lab, founded by ex-OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, is reportedly aiming to close one of the largest seed rounds in history. Business Insider reported on Thursday that the company has doubled its target to $2 billion, which would value it at at least $10 billion.

With no product or revenue yet, the company has attracted investors due to its team of top AI researchers. Recent hires include Bob McGrew, former chief research officer at OpenAI, and Alec Radford, a key figure behind OpenAI's innovations. Thinking Machines Lab plans to create more customizable and capable AI systems.
