STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Apple Rebrands Search Ads Business as ‘Apple Ads’

Laurenz Heymann

Apple has rebranded its Search Ads as "Apple Ads," reflecting the broader scope of its advertising business. Originally limited to promoted search results, Apple Ads now appears in multiple places across the App Store, including the Today tab and at the bottom of app pages in the "You Might Also Like" section.

This name change also signals potential future expansion, as Apple is rumored to be considering ads in other apps like Apple Maps. The new, simpler name better fits Apple's evolving ad strategy, which aims to increase revenue in its growing ad services division.

SPACE
Blue Origin Launches Katy Perry to Space

Blue Origin

Blue Origin’s latest mission saw an all-female crew—including pop star Katy Perry and Jeff Bezos’s fiancée Lauren Sánchez—launch to the edge of space and return safely Monday morning. The New Shepard rocket lifted off from a Texas ranch, carrying the crew past the Kármán line for a few minutes of weightlessness.

TV host Gayle King and three others joined the flight, cheered on by Oprah Winfrey, who called the moment “more than just overcoming fear.” The capsule hit Mach 3 before landing softly on the Texas plains. Bezos greeted the returning crew with hugs and congratulations.

Meta to Resume AI Training on European User Content

Dave Adamson

Meta announced it will resume training its AI on public content from Facebook and Instagram users in the EU, starting this week. This follows a pause due to data privacy concerns and regulatory pushback. The company will also use user interactions with its AI to help train its models.

After launching a limited version of Meta AI in the EU last month, the company has clarified it will now use public content to train its AI, following a legal review. EU users will receive notifications and can opt out of having their data used. Meta promises to honor all opt-out requests.

OpenAI Developing X-Like Social Media Platform

Jonathan Kemper

OpenAI is quietly working on a social media platform with a ChatGPT-powered image feed, according to The Verge. Still in early development, the prototype hints at a potential rival to Elon Musk’s X and Meta’s Facebook and Instagram—though it’s unclear whether it’ll launch as a standalone app or live inside ChatGPT.

The move could give OpenAI access to real-time data to train its models, a key advantage its competitors already enjoy. CEO Sam Altman is reportedly seeking outside feedback, signaling serious interest, but there's no word yet on if—or when—the project will go public.

OpenAI Launches Coding-Focused GPT-4.1 Models

OpenAI

OpenAI launched its GPT-4.1 models, including full, mini, and nano versions, optimized for coding and instruction-following. With a 1-million-token context window, these models can process massive text inputs, setting a new standard for AI programming tools.

The models are designed to boost software development efficiency, excelling in tasks like frontend coding and consistent tool usage. GPT-4.1 outperforms previous versions on coding benchmarks, with the nano version being the fastest and most cost-effective. Pricing starts at $0.10 per million input tokens for nano.
