STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Sam Bankman-Fried breaks his silence on X after two years

Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced FTX founder serving a 25-year sentence, broke his two-year silence on X with an underwhelming post. His return wasn’t to address his downfall but to chime in on Elon Musk’s recent ultimatum to federal employees, joking that he, too, hadn’t checked his email in “a few (hundred) days.”

His 10-post thread offered a lukewarm take on how firing people is complicated, leaving many wondering why he felt compelled to weigh in. Despite the lack of substance, his brief return coincided with a 30% spike in FTX’s token, FTT, raising speculation about his motives.

How SBF accessed X remains unclear, as inmates typically lack social media access. However, prisoners often relay messages through outside contacts, allowing them to maintain a digital presence despite their confinement.

1,000 UK artists release silent album in protest of AI

The U.K. government is pushing to attract AI companies by changing copyright laws, allowing AI to train on artists’ content without permission—unless creators opt out. This has sparked backlash from musicians who see it as a threat to their rights and livelihoods.

In protest, 1,000 artists, including Kate Bush, Imogen Heap, Hans Zimmer, and Damon Albarn, released Is This What We Want?—a silent album featuring recordings of empty studios. The 12-track album spells out a clear message: The British government must not legalize music theft to benefit AI companies.

This move is part of a growing global fight against AI-driven copyright changes, with similar protests emerging in the U.S. and beyond. Artists argue that their work shouldn’t be exploited without consent, raising urgent questions about the future of creative rights.

Apple and Indonesia reach deal to end iPhone 16 ban

The iPhone 16 may finally launch in Indonesia after Apple agreed to invest $1 billion and train local talent in R&D. The country had banned sales in October after Apple fell short of its required $109 million infrastructure investment by $15 million. To reverse the decision, Apple gradually increased its offer—from $10 million to $100 million—before settling on the current $1 billion deal.

Indonesia pushed for more, demanding additional benefits like R&D training and a new AirTag production plant on Batam, which would account for 20% of global supply. The government also secured a $10 million payment for past violations between 2020 and 2023.

While the agreement is promising, nothing is official until iPhone 16 hits the shelves. Still, Indonesia has leveraged its position to secure significant gains from Apple.
