Hackers steal $1.5 billion from crypto exchange Bybit

Bybit, a major crypto exchange, has suffered a record-breaking $1.5 billion hack, making it the largest crypto heist in history. The attack targeted Bybit’s cold wallet, meant for secure storage, with stolen funds—mainly ether—rapidly moved and liquidated across multiple platforms. CEO Ben Zhou reassured users that withdrawals remain normal and other cold wallets are secure.
Blockchain analysis firms, including Elliptic, traced the stolen assets and linked the hack to North Korea’s Lazarus Group, infamous for exploiting crypto platforms to fund the regime. The group has previously drained billions using advanced laundering tactics. “We’ve labeled the thief’s addresses to prevent cash-outs,” said Elliptic’s Tom Robinson.
The breach sparked a surge in withdrawals, but Zhou claimed outflows stabilized. To reassure users, Bybit secured a bridge loan to cover losses. Experts warn that such large-scale hacks remain a persistent threat to the crypto industry.

Apple scraps data protection tool for UK customers

Apple is removing its highest-level data security tool, Advanced Data Protection (ADP), from UK customers after the government demanded access to user data. ADP uses end-to-end encryption, ensuring only account holders can view their stored files, even Apple cannot access them.
Despite Apple's long-standing opposition to weakening encryption, it has now decided to block ADP activation in the UK. This means UK users’ iCloud data will no longer be fully encrypted, leaving it accessible to Apple and shareable with law enforcement if a warrant is issued.
As of Friday at 15:00 GMT, UK users attempting to enable ADP receive an error message. Those already using the service will lose access at a later date, marking a significant shift in Apple’s privacy protections for UK customers.

X-37B space plane snaps photo of Earth from orbit

The U.S. Space Force released a rare image taken by the X-37B space plane, showing Earth in the distance. The photo, captured during its ongoing seventh mission, offers a rare glimpse of the secretive craft, which launched in late 2023. Its previous mission set a record, staying in orbit for 908 days before returning in 2022.
While details of the current mission remain classified, the Space Force confirmed that the X-37B successfully tested aerobraking—a fuel-efficient technique using atmospheric drag to adjust orbit. This marks the first time the Boeing-built vehicle has attempted such a maneuver.
The Space Force initially announced the aerobraking test in October and has now confirmed its success. However, the mission’s duration and ultimate objectives remain undisclosed, adding to the mystery surrounding the space plane’s activities.
