CoreWeave Strikes $11.9 Billion Deal with OpenAI

Jonathan Kemper
CoreWeave announced a five-year, $11.9 billion deal with OpenAI on March 11, where OpenAI will invest $350 million in CoreWeave through stock, and CoreWeave will provide AI infrastructure. The deal comes ahead of CoreWeave's planned IPO, with the company reporting $1.9 billion in revenue but a net loss of $863 million in 2024. CoreWeave, founded in 2017, specializes in cloud-based GPU infrastructure for AI developers.
The partnership could boost CoreWeave, especially since Microsoft, which accounted for about two-thirds of its revenue, canceled some contracts over missed deadlines, though CoreWeave has denied this. Microsoft had planned to invest $10 billion by 2030, but the new deal with OpenAI may help strengthen CoreWeave’s position.

Rivian Launches Hands-Free Driving Assist in Latest Update

Rivian
Rivian’s latest software update introduces key features for its electric vehicles, including Enhanced Highway Assist. This system controls steering, acceleration, and braking on compatible highways, while an infrared camera ensures drivers remain attentive without hands on the wheel. The feature is currently exclusive to Gen 2 vehicles.
Additionally, Rivian has rolled out Rally Mode for its Performance Dual-Motor lineup, boosting responsiveness across various terrains. Some models will also offer a $5,000 upgrade to add new drive modes like Rally, Sport, and Soft Sand. Other updates include improved visibility while reversing and tire puncture detection.

Sony Tests AI-Powered PlayStation Characters

Sony
Sony has used AI to enable a PlayStation character to converse with players, as shown in a now-deleted demo featuring an AI-powered version of Aloy from Horizon Forbidden West, The Verge reports. In the demo, Aloy responds to voice prompts with synthesized speech and facial expressions, answering questions about the game and even offering personal responses, like mentioning a sore throat.
The prototype uses GPT-4 and Llama 3 for decision-making and conversation, while OpenAI's Whisper handles speech-to-text. Sony also incorporated its own Emotional Voice Synthesis (EVS) and Mockingbird technologies for speech generation and facial animation.

Elon Musk Says X Outage Caused by 'Massive Cyberattack'

Kent Nishimura/Reuters
Elon Musk’s X suffered major outages Monday, which he blamed on a cyberattack with IP addresses traced to Ukraine. “We’re not sure exactly what happened,” Musk said on Fox Business, calling it a “massive cyberattack” aimed at taking down the platform. He didn’t provide further details on the attackers or any possible government involvement, noting that IP addresses can be spoofed.
The outages began at 6 a.m. ET, with reports peaking at nearly 40,000 by mid-morning before tapering off in the afternoon, according to DownDetector. Users worldwide reported issues loading the platform. By the time Musk spoke on Fox Business around 4 p.m. ET, X was back online. Earlier in the day, he speculated on X that “a large, coordinated group and/or a country” was behind the attack but offered no concrete proof.

Apple’s iOS 19 To Bring Biggest Redesign In A Decade

Apple
Apple’s iOS 19 will be its biggest software overhaul in years, featuring the most significant design changes since iOS 7, per Bloomberg. The update revamps icons, menus, apps, and system buttons, inspired by visionOS. Apple aims for a more consistent look across devices, with similar updates coming to macOS 16 and iPadOS.
macOS 16 is expected to be the biggest Mac update since Big Sur in 2020. Apple also plans to simplify navigation, though details remain scarce. A rumored Camera app redesign is also in the works. iOS 19 debuts at WWDC in June, with a public release in September alongside iPhone 17.
